How to Create a Henna Tattoo
By: Krysteen Lomonaco ~
Hello fellow henna lovers! We are excited to show you how to create a henna tattoo from mixing to aftercare. Applying henna is a fun activity for kids and adults alike, perfect for a girl's night in, birthday party, or just because! Let's get started.
What you will need:
- A plastic container with a tight fitting lid
- A plastic spoon for mixing
- Application cone
- 2 - 3 spoonfuls of professional grade henna powder
- Lemon or lime juice concentrate
- 1 heaping spoonful of sugar
- 6 - 8 drops of eucalyptus oil
You may purchase kits and supplies on our product page: http://mehndimadness.com/products.asp
Give yourself enough time to mix the henna and let the mixture sit for a minimum of 12 hours, overnight for the best results. This mixture will stay activated for about 2 days, after that, the mixture will not stain as well.
- Mix henna
Scoop the henna into the plastic container. Add enough lemon or lime juice to create a thick paste. The mixture should be thick enough to mold into a lump with your spoon. Add your spoonful of sugar (insert Mary Poppins quote here) and the Eucalyptus oil. Mix well.
*note* After letting your mixture sit, check it to make sure it's still the thick paste consistency. If it looks too dry, add more juice.
- Choose design and Location of tattoo
Pick out any design you would like for your henna tattoo. Check out our gallery for inspiration! Henna stains best on the hands, feet, ankles and wrists, lighter on the arms, legs and torso.
- Pick out an applicator
We typically use heat-sealed cones. These can be purchased on our site as a stand alone item. They also come in our kits!
- Apply design
Use a transfer pencil or a transfer kit found on our products page. Another way to transfer a design to your skin would be to free-hand using a water soluble marker. Or do it like the pro's and just go for it without any kind of guideline.
- Trace design with henna mixture
Here's the fun part! Trace the design with your henna mixture. It will dry in the 1st hour but leave on the skin for 4-6 hours. For best results let the paste crack, dry, and fall off on its own.
Spray paste with a mixture of lemon or lime juice and sugar to help the paste stay on. Once the past comes off, the satin will darken over several days and should last for 1 - 3 weeks. Be sure not to get the paste/design wet for the first day (about 12 hr.) otherwise, it may not darken.
- Show us your creation!
Show off your new design on our facebook page so that all your fellow henna-lovers can ooh and awe over your creation.
