Can someone be allergic to lemon juice? Since it's the main ingredient to mix henna with, I just wondered.

I've wondered about that too. In my 13 years of doing henna, no one has ever been allergic to lemons or lemon juice or citrus for that matter...until 3 weeks ago. I was invited to Shelli's blessingway to do her belly henna and she informed me she was allergic to lemon juice. She asked if the henna could be mixed with something else. We decided to mix it with lime juice because she was sure limes didn't have the same affect on her system as lemons and many countries traditionally use limes instead of lemons therefore it works quite well.
While I worked on her, I asked her about the allergy. I told her it was unusual as lemons weren't something that people generally had an issue with. She agreed and told me she thought she had given the allergy to herself. When she was young her mom wouldn't let her bleach her hair and she tried to use lemons to lighten it many times, using an excessive amount of fresh lemon on her hair. Each time she tried, it burned her scalp and the skin got very red and itchy. Now any amount of lemons bothers her skin. She had recently went to an allergist for some testing and lemons were the only thing that tested positive for allergy. That's also how she knew limes didn't.
It was interesting to know that her situation may have been self induced. Which would still indicate to me, lemons are very safe to mix henna with and it would be unusual for one to have a reaction to them. Her design turned out great. The blessingway was a huge success with good food, good friends and good henna!
